The new Bitcoin mining data center will use environmentally friendly and sustainable energy.
Validus Power Corp. and France-based sustainable mining company Startmining have begun construction of a new Bitcoin mining facility, according to an announcement published Wednesday.
The 100 MW data center is located on a Validus Power Generation site in the Canadian province of Ontario. The mining facility is expected to be operational by August 2022, the two companies said in the press release.
The project builds on Startmining’s expansion efforts and Validus’s strategic position as a leading provider of advanced energy solutions. Together, the companies aim to grow the Bitcoin ecosystem in Canada.
Todd Shortt, president and CEO of Validus, noted that his company and Startmining share a common vision for the future of Bitcoin mining. He said that future will see Canada take a leading role by providing a “robust and viable” crypto-mining infrastructure.
“This is especially true in Ontario, where we have a strong support framework,” Shortt added.
According to the press release, the project will include an overhaul of existing energy assets, with planned upgrades to deliver an “innovative energy mix” that results in an environmentally friendly and sustainable Bitcoin mining profile.
Canada is home to some of the world’s largest Bitcoin mining firms, including Bitfarms Ltd., Intellabridge Technology, Hut 8 Mining, Digihost Technology and HIVE Blockchain Technologies, all of which operate mining farms in the country.
Validus signed a 100 MW power purchase agreement with Hut 8 Mining in April of last year, supporting the miner’s ESG objectives.
