Gunnercooke, a UK law firm, now accepts major cryptocurrencies as payment for its legal services. Clients seeking legal assistance can pay in Bitcoin, Ethereum, Dogecoin, or Cardano, reflecting the firm’s move to accommodate digital-asset transactions alongside traditional payment methods.
CoinPass Facilitates Law Firm Payments
To process these cryptocurrency payments, Gunnercooke has partnered with CoinPass, a regulated crypto exchange. CoinPass is registered with the UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and complies with the relevant regulatory requirements. Such registration is essential for crypto firms to provide financial services in the United Kingdom; without it they cannot legally operate, as highlighted by past regulatory actions involving other major crypto platforms.
Jeff Hancock, CEO of CoinPass, commented: “The CoinPass team is proud to be the crypto exchange partner for Gunnercooke. We are especially excited to work with an organisation that is ambitious about advancing blockchain and crypto within the UK.”
Familiarity with the Crypto Industry
Gunnercooke explained in a press release that the decision to accept cryptocurrencies did not come out of nowhere. The move was driven by demand from their existing client base. The firm represents roughly 100 entities across the crypto ecosystem, including developers, platforms, and exchanges. Their client portfolio made cryptocurrency payments a practical and client-focused development rather than a marketing stunt.
The first crypto-paying client was Attestant, a company operating in the cryptocurrency sector, which became the inaugural client to settle a legal invoice with digital assets.
First Transaction Settled in Ethereum
Gunnercooke provided further detail about the initial crypto transaction: Attestant paid in Ether. According to the firm’s statement, Gunnercooke advised Attestant on legal and regulatory matters related to an operational initiative. The payment in Ether marked a concrete example of how legal services and digital assets can be integrated for commercial transactions.
Robert Olsen, Chief Commercial Officer at Attestant, said: “Attestant was pleased to make its first crypto payment in Ether to Gunnercooke. We believe that accepting crypto payments will help position them as a leading digital asset law practice in the UK. The firm has been a trusted and valuable partner throughout our journey from startup to thriving business, and we look forward to working with them for many years to come.”
A UK First
While a number of US law firms already accept cryptocurrency payments, Gunnercooke’s finance chief, Naseer Patel, stated that the firm is the first in the United Kingdom to publicly offer this payment option. The firm sees this as an important step toward supporting clients operating in the digital asset space and providing flexible, secure payment options.
“To date, only a small number of law firms in the United States have accepted payments via crypto assets. We’re proud to be an innovation leader in the UK. This capability will enable us to work with a broader range of clients across different jurisdictions and to offer our partners the flexibility to receive payment securely in the way they prefer,” Patel commented.
Part of a Broader Shift Toward Adoption
Gunnercooke underscored that accepting crypto payments is a practical business decision rather than a publicity tactic. The firm expects growing mainstream acceptance of cryptocurrencies across industries. Over the coming decade, it anticipates that using crypto for everyday payments will become increasingly common, and legal and professional services will need to adapt accordingly.
The firm’s interest in digital assets is also reflected in its content and client engagement. Gunnercooke produces two podcasts per week, many episodes of which focus on cryptocurrencies and the regulatory landscape surrounding them. Recent discussions have contrasted traditional finance with crypto-native markets, and hosts have explored the influence and role of prominent investors and entrepreneurs within the crypto ecosystem.
By integrating regulated crypto payment processing and continuing to build expertise in digital asset law, Gunnercooke aims to support clients navigating the fast-evolving intersection of law, business, and blockchain technology. Their approach highlights the practicalities of providing legal services to cryptocurrency-focused companies while maintaining regulatory compliance and client security.
