Surviving One Week Using Only Bitcoin: A Reality Show Challenge

One actor was based in South Korea and the other in San Francisco. Their challenge was to find merchants who would accept Bitcoin as a direct method of payment.

The first TV program centered on Bitcoin

Traditional South Korean broadcaster Asia Economic TV produced and broadcast a reality show that challenged two film actors to live using only Bitcoin for a full week. The survival challenge is translated as “Live for a Week Using Only Bitcoin.” The experiment took place in two countries with very different levels of adoption: South Korea and the United States. Actor Kim Bo-Sung spent a week living in South Korea with only Bitcoin, while actor and painter Yun Song-ah did the same in San Francisco, United States.

The most recent episode of this reality program aired last week and is available in video format.

Revealing contrasting realities

The show highlights the contrast in how the two actors managed to survive using only Bitcoin in their respective locations. Cameras followed them through everyday situations such as buying food, renting an apartment, traveling and other activities. The show’s producer explained that the program reveals two completely different survival styles between the countries. For example, San Francisco is among the global cities where Bitcoin is relatively widely used, while the opposite is true in South Korea, where Bitcoin, ICOs and blockchain technology in general face strict regulation.
