SpaceX to Accept Dogecoin Payments for Upcoming Mission

SpaceX to Accept Dogecoin for DOGE-1 Lunar Mission Scheduled for Q1 2022

Geometric Energy Corporation (GEC) has confirmed it paid SpaceX for the first commercial lunar payload using Dogecoin (DOGE).

In its announcement, the Canadian company explained: “Geometric Energy Corporation’s DOGE-1 Mission to the Moon will involve Geometric Space Corporation (GSC) mission management collaborating with SpaceX to launch a 40 kg CubeSat as a rideshare on a Falcon 9 lunar payload mission in Q1 2022. The payload will gather lunar-spatial intelligence using onboard sensors and cameras, supported by integrated communications and computing systems.”

Samuel Reid, CEO of Geometric Energy, said paying with Dogecoin reinforced DOGE’s role as a unit of account for lunar commerce within the space sector.

Tom Ochinero, SpaceX’s Vice President of Commercial Sales, said the team is excited to launch DOGE-1 to the Moon. He noted the mission will showcase the use of cryptocurrencies beyond Earth orbit and help lay groundwork for future interplanetary commerce.

SpaceX is led by entrepreneur Elon Musk, who has been a visible supporter of Dogecoin. That endorsement has been an important factor behind DOGE’s substantial gains earlier this year.

According to the joint press release, the companies said the transaction highlights DOGE as a fast, reliable and cryptographically secure cryptocurrency suitable where traditional banking services are unavailable. They added that Dogecoin is capable of fully financing a commercial Moon mission and will be the selected cryptocurrency for lunar business between SpaceX and Geometric Energy Corporation.

Dogecoin climbed strongly in recent weeks, briefly surpassing $0.70 to reach new highs. Following Elon Musk’s recent appearance on Saturday Night Live, the price experienced a pullback.
