If you grew up in the 1990s, you likely remember Goosebumps—the iconic children’s horror series by American author R.L. Stine.
Classic titles like Say Cheese and Die, One Day at Horrorland, Revenge of the Lawn Gnomes, How I Got My Shrunken Head, and Vampire Breath remain memorable. The books later inspired movies, beginning with the first Goosebumps film released in 2015.
With the release of Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween, Sony Pictures—one of the films’ financiers—partnered with Greenfence Consumer, a company that builds blockchain-protected mobile loyalty and rewards platforms, to distribute digital trading cards tied to the movie.
Via Websaver.ca, fans can collect a new card each day through November 5. Collected cards can unlock digital scratcher cards and additional chances to win. Some cards come pre-loaded with free cinema tickets, while others include cash rewards.
What used to be a face-to-face exchange of trading cards has moved online and onto the blockchain. The Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween GFT Authentic Digital Collectibles demonstrate how crypto collectibles and non-fungible tokens can be applied to marketing campaigns—and how these technologies reach children who spend time online.
The GFT mark, created by Greenfence and its sister company Greenfence Consumer, identifies collectibles as verified, authentic, and authorized by the intellectual property owner. That verification, along with scarcity and appeal, helps establish perceived value for the digital cards.
Jamie Stevens, executive vice president of worldwide consumer products at Sony Pictures Entertainment, said the company was impressed by Greenfence Consumer’s efforts to make blockchain user-friendly for a broad audience.
“When they approached us about collaborating with Websaver.ca, the largest coupon site in Canada, we were excited to try the platform and to reach such a large segment of our target audience,” Stevens said. “Greenfence Consumer created simple, fun sweepstakes that will engage parents and their children with our movie—which is perfect because Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween is a really fun movie.”
The sign-in process for fans is straightforward and requires no third-party apps. After creating a private digital wallet, users receive a Magic Book—modeled after the film prop—to store the cards they collect.
Rather than chasing the hype around initial coin offerings or focusing solely on cryptocurrencies, Greenfence Consumer emphasized building blockchain-backed assets with intrinsic value that appeal to mainstream users.
“Digital collectibles are a powerful and practical use case for the technology and showcase the many ways blockchain can be leveraged,” said Mimi Slavin, head of marketing and business development at Greenfence Consumer.
