NEAR Protocol is a layer-1 blockchain designed as a community-governed cloud computing platform. It aims to address limitations that have hindered competing blockchains, such as declining transaction speeds as usage grows.
Unlike Ethereum-style cryptographic wallet addresses, NEAR uses human-readable account names. It also implements distinctive scaling solutions and employs a unique consensus mechanism called Doomslug.
NEAR uses a technology called Nightshade to substantially increase transaction throughput. Nightshade is a form of sharding where different validator sets process transactions concurrently across multiple shard chains, boosting the overall capacity of the blockchain.
In contrast to conventional sharding, Nightshade shards produce portions of the next block known as “chunks.” This approach enables NEAR Protocol to target up to 100,000 transactions per second.
