Meta also plans to leverage its Spark AR studio tools to provide augmented reality support for NFTs in Instagram Stories. While the company has confirmed the initiative, it has not yet announced an official public launch date for the NFT features.
Meta and NFTs — how it started
As early as March 2022, Meta’s CEO had discussed the feature, saying the company was exploring options to add support for digital collectibles across its platforms. He also indicated that, in the coming months, NFT minting support could become available on Facebook.
By combining blockchain technology with its platforms, Meta’s NFT functionality could connect more than 3 billion monthly users worldwide with digital collectibles. The company released a preview of what creators and collectors can expect from upcoming integrations, including augmented reality experiences in Instagram Stories.
Reliable sources have also reported that Instagram plans to support NFTs issued on Solana, Ethereum, Flow, and Polygon. Meanwhile, Twitter — a competitor to Facebook — recently introduced NFT profile picture integration as part of its paid Blue subscription service.
