Enjin Joins UN Global Compact, Plans to Use NFTs for Social Good

As the first NFT company to join the Compact, Enjin will continue reducing its environmental impact and promoting equity

Blockchain gaming company Enjin announced yesterday that it has become the first non-fungible token (NFT) company to join the United Nations Global Compact.

The UN Global Compact is a voluntary initiative that encourages companies worldwide to adopt sustainable and socially responsible policies and to report on their implementation.

Launched during Kofi Annan’s tenure as UN Secretary-General in the 2000s, the Compact has grown to span more than 170 countries and include over 13,000 participating organizations.

The Compact’s ten guiding principles focus on human rights, labor, the environment, and anti-corruption. With an emphasis on positive environmental and social impact, Enjin intends to apply blockchain technology to help address these challenges.

“We are excited to work with Enjin to explore how blockchain and NFTs can contribute to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals,” said Irakli Beridze, Head of the Centre for AI and Robotics at the UN Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute.

Enjin has already taken steps to address environmental concerns: the company joined the Crypto Climate Accord and made its layer-2 scaling solution JumpNet carbon-negative in an effort to reduce the environmental footprint of NFTs.

Beridze added: “As we strive to recover from the global pandemic and its effects, we are witnessing exponential growth in technologies such as AI and blockchain. Now more than ever we must harness the potential of these new technologies to ensure we are better equipped and more united in the future, making our planet a more livable and equitable place for everyone.”

The crypto project will also adopt the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to explore further ways NFTs can be used to protect the planet, while working to unite stakeholders to combat inequality, injustice, and extreme poverty. The technology already supports greater access because NFT marketplaces can be permissionless.

Enjin CEO Maxim Blagov explained: “Joining the UN Global Compact reaffirms our commitment to improving lives through blockchain technology and will ensure these efforts are sustainable, focused, and optimized while keeping us publicly accountable along the way.”
