BOTLabs Announces web3name Launch at Paris Blockchain Week

BTE BOTLabs Trusted Entity GmbH (BT.E) announced at Paris Blockchain Week the launch of web3name, an application that lets users create a customizable name to represent their digital identity, according to a press release obtained by Coin Journal.

This web3name can be linked to addresses on the KILT blockchain and across the broader Polkadot ecosystem.

Additional layers of verification

Users can attach SocialKYC credentials—such as Twitter, Twitch, GitHub, email, and other verified accounts—to their web3name, adding multiple layers of verification to their identity. For a limited time, registering a web3name is free.

A unique digital identity for the Web3 era

Each identity can hold only one web3name, but users are free to create multiple identities, each with its own web3name—for instance, a professional identity, a collector identity, a gamer identity, and so on.

On KILT, digital identity is centered on a decentralized identifier (DID), a unique alphanumeric string assigned to the user and to any credentials they choose to associate with that identity.

Once a user claims a web3name, it remains theirs unless they decide to relinquish it back to the web3name registry. There are no ongoing fees or renewal charges for claimed names.

Identity linked to your KILT address

A web3name can be connected to your KILT address or to any addresses you control across the Polkadot ecosystem, making it simpler for others to reference you. The service plans to extend support to chains outside the Polkadot ecosystem in the future.

Validators

Web3name can be associated with any number of addresses on any blockchain within the Polkadot ecosystem using the KILT Sporran wallet or any wallet that supports the polkadot.js browser extension API, even though the name is anchored on the KILT blockchain.

Strengthening identity

Web3name is intended to enhance identity rather than replace blockchain addresses. While a web3name can be linked to an address, it is not recommended as a full substitute for an address because:

  • A user may choose to relinquish their web3name, at which point it could be claimed by another user with a different address, and
  • A single web3name or identity can be connected to multiple addresses.
