Bitcoin Still Struggles to Prove Itself as a Store of Value: BlackRock CEO

BlackRock CEO Larry Fink Says Bitcoin Could Become a Widely Accepted Store of Value

Laurence Fink, chief executive of BlackRock—the world’s largest asset manager—said the cryptocurrency sector has not yet matured, but that Bitcoin (BTC) has the potential to evolve into a widely accepted store of value. Speaking in an interview with Bloomberg, Fink emphasized that Bitcoin’s price remains highly volatile, making it unsuitable for risk-averse, “calm” investors at this stage.

It’s not a market for the calm. Right now, it’s still untested. We’re watching it, we’re enjoying the conversation. But it has not been proven yet,” he said.

Fink acknowledged the strong media attention surrounding cryptocurrencies, particularly Bitcoin, and said that increased coverage has attracted many new participants to the market. He drew a distinction between the perspectives of business media, which often highlight the asset’s long-term adoption potential, and investors, who are primarily concerned with its effectiveness as a store of wealth.

According to Fink, broader market depth is necessary for Bitcoin and other digital assets to reach their full potential. Greater depth would allow institutional and large-scale investors to place substantial capital into the market without significantly moving Bitcoin’s price. Until that depth is achieved, he argued, the asset’s long-term viability remains uncertain.

Fink also said he expects some form of digital currency to play a central role in the global financial system in the future. That currency could be an existing digital asset or one that has yet to be created, he added, underscoring the evolving nature of money and the finance industry as digital innovation continues.

In sum, while Larry Fink sees promise in Bitcoin as a potential store of value, he remains cautious. He believes that broader market adoption, increased liquidity, and further proof of stability will be needed before the asset can be considered a reliable option for conservative investors and large-scale institutional allocations.
