Altcoins Surging Double Digits as Bitcoin Hits 3-Month High

Bitcoin’s weekend lull ended Monday morning as the price surged above $80,500 for the first time since late January.

Most altcoins are trading higher as well: Ethereum neared $2,400, XRP reclaimed the $1.40 area, and larger-cap gainers include ZEC, UNI, WLFI, and ONDO.

BTC Breaks Above $80K

Last week also opened with a sharp move—Bitcoin reached $79,500 initially—but that advance was quickly reversed and BTC fell below $76,000 by Tuesday. Volatility continued around the Federal Open Market Committee meeting midweek: Bitcoin rallied to about $78,000 ahead of the announcement and dropped under $75,000 after the Fed signaled no change to interest rates.

Bitcoin recovered over the following days, with a notable uptick on Friday when reports surfaced that Iran had offered a new peace proposal to the United States. BTC climbed toward $79,000 before the rally stalled after the proposal was rejected. Over a mostly quiet weekend, bitcoin briefly pushed to $79,200 following another diplomatic overture, only to retreat again after Washington declined that proposal as well.

Early Monday, the cryptocurrency resumed upward momentum and jumped past $80,000 for the first time since January 31. On some exchanges it reached roughly $80,600 before pulling back and now sits just below $80,000. Market capitalization has risen to about $1.6 trillion, and Bitcoin’s dominance over altcoins stands near 58.5% on CoinGecko.
