David Marcus Unveils New Bitcoin Company Lightspark

Lightspark, a new Bitcoin-focused startup founded by Meta’s (formerly Facebook) former crypto chief David Marcus, is currently recruiting as it aims to build around Bitcoin.

David Marcus, who led Meta’s cryptocurrency efforts, has announced a new startup that plans to expand the tooling and capabilities surrounding Bitcoin.

The company is called Lightspark, and Marcus says the new venture will concentrate on features related to Bitcoin’s Lightning Network.

“I wanted to share that we are starting a new company called Lightspark to explore, build, and expand the capabilities and usability of Bitcoin,” the former Meta executive noted in a tweet.

He added that the company’s “first step” is to “actively assemble a team to dive deeper into the Lightning Network.”

Commenting on the current market downturn, Marcus said:

“Downturns are great moments to focus on building and creating long-term value with mission-aligned people. We’re excited to dig into Lightning, learn more, and work closely with the community. We’ll share more about our work as we make progress!”

Lightspark has secured backing in a funding round led by a16z and Paradigm, with participation from Matrix Partners, Thrive Capital, Ribbit Capital, Coatue, and other investors.
