Algorand CEO: Bitcoin Settlement Lacks Elegance

Algorand Foundation Chief Executive Officer says he is a big fan of Bitcoin but believes the cryptocurrency has shortcomings in certain areas.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Algorand Foundation discussed various aspects of the cryptocurrency space in a recent interview with the LA Times. In that conversation, Silvio Micali described Bitcoin’s solution as lacking elegance.

When asked about his view of Bitcoin, Micali said;

“I agree with the main idea. The idea is good, but the implementation is not very elegant. We all want beauty and elegance in what we build. Bitcoin consumes as much electricity as a small country, while we will use about the electricity of ten houses. [Algorand uses a so‑called pure proof‑of‑stake method to validate transaction blocks, compared with Bitcoin’s proof‑of‑work system which is far more energy intensive.]”

Micali added that the blockchain industry is still in its early stages and has a long road ahead. He noted that multiple generations of blockchain technology are operating at the same time. He said;

“We live in a very fragmented world. We have blockchain 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0 — which I believe is Algorand — all existing simultaneously. That is very unique. If you look at the Industrial Revolution… newer technology typically replaces older systems, so you don’t normally see them all coexisting. We are at a very unique moment where highly advanced blockchains like ours coexist with early‑generation blockchains that remain in use.”

The Algorand CEO continued;

“When blockchains begin to be used for transactions, a few chains that can really process transactions at very low cost will emerge, in my view. As traditional finance starts to move onto blockchains, you will see blockchains being used massively and transaction speeds will increase. And some stores of value [like Bitcoin] may well persist.”

Algorand is one of the world’s leading cryptocurrencies. The Algorand Foundation recently signed a collaboration agreement with FIFA’s governing body and became the official blockchain partner for the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2022.
